First Freight Train from Russia Passes Through Turkmenistan to Iran

The first freight train from Russia has transited through Turkmenistan to Iran, delivering a large shipment of goods, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported Sunday.

The train consisted of 62 forty-foot containers carrying paper, pulp, and other products.

It completed the route through Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan in 12 days. Part of the cargo was destined for Iran, while the remainder continued to Iraq.

According to the report, the trip marks the start of regular rail service between Russia, Iran, and Central Asian countries.

The development of the eastern branch of the International North–South Transport Corridor provides an alternative and faster route for trade between Northern Europe, Russia, the Caspian region, Iran, and India.
